Heat exchangers, also called heat transfer systems, are designed to recover heat for reuse. Different techniques are used to achieve this, but basically the heat exchanger transfers heat from a sending medium to a receiving medium. Both media are separated from each other by a heat-permeable partition wall, which allows the media to have different states of aggregation. Heat exchangers are used in, for instance, heating technology, industry, refrigeration and air conditioning technology.

Modern gas heating systems with condensing technology are equipped with a special heat exchanger. Exhaust gases produced when heating are absorbed by the heat exchanger and the steam it contains is condensed. The resulting heat is then fed into the heating circuit. If there were no heat exchanger, this energy would simply go up in smoke unused. This environmentally friendly technology is subsidised by the government.
