The pressure relief valve of your heating system plays a crucial role in ensuring safety and peace of mind. It acts as a reliable safeguard, protecting your entire installation from dangerously high pressure in the heating water. This essential component steps in especially when control systems malfunction or a part fails, preventing costly damage and helping your system operate smoothly.

This vital safety device is a standard feature in every heating system. It is typically screwed directly onto a heating pipe and channels excess pressure via a discharge pipe and an open siphon into the wastewater system. Inside, the pressure relief valve contains a spring-loaded membrane. When the pressure rises sharply, the heating water pushes against the membrane, compressing the spring. Once a predetermined activation pressure is reached - the setpoint - the force of the water overcomes the spring’s resistance, opening the pathway for excess water to escape. The Pressure Relief Valve releases water until the pressure drops below the setpoint, at which point it closes again to restore normal operation.

Pressure in the heating system can increase significantly when the water heats up, due to thermal expansion. This expansion causes the volume to increase, which can lead to a rise in pressure within a sealed system. Excessive pressure can exert strong forces on pipes, fittings, and seals, risking damage or even pipe rupture. Fortunately, the Pressure Relief Valve generally only activates if other system components - such as the expansion vessel or control system - fail or malfunction.

To maintain reliable protection, regular inspection and maintenance of the pressure relief valve are essential. Proper care ensures your heating system remains safe, efficient, and dependable over time.
