Safety valve

Safety valves within closed heating systems, solar thermal systemsor water heaters are also called pressure relief valves. Safety valves are required by law and protect the systems from damage caused by excessive pressure. In water heaters, the safety valves may also not have any impact on the water quality. For solar thermal systems, they must be able to withstand particularly high temperatures and the use of solar fluid. For safety reasons, installation and regular maintenance in all systems should always be handled by a qualified specialist.

If the pressure exceeds the pre-defined value, the safety valve opens automatically and releases the excess pressure. When the correct pressure level is reached, the safety valve closes again. Discharged liquid or steam is collected and released through a relief line.

Possible causes of excess pressure that could result in the bursting of boilers and pipes could be, for example, defective components or overheating. Small pressure fluctuations are normal and are absorbed by an expansion tank. Safety valves are the last option and are only triggered in an emergency.
