Generally speaking, the dew point is the temperature at which steam condenses. Depending on which fuel is used, varying amounts of heating energy are still contained within the flue gases. Through a cooled return temperature, condensing technology attains the required dew point, which makes the thermal energy usable again by the heating system.

The calorific value indicates the thermal energy of a heating system at complete combustion, including recovery through the condensation heat of the fllue gases. The recovered heat energy is up to 6% of the calorific value for heating oil (dew point: 47 degrees), up to 9% for liquid gas (dew point: 57 degrees) and up to 11% for natural gas (dew point: 57 degrees).

This type of heat recovery is not only environmentally friendly, but also reduces the cost of heating because the energy would otherwise be wasted and unused. Condensed unused steam even damages the chimney, as it leads to so-called sootiness. When using heat pumps for cooling in summer, the dew point must not be reached in the living areas, as this will cause condensation to form in the rooms.
