Cogeneration

Combined heat and power (CHP) is the generic term for processes in which electricity and heat are generated simultaneously. The heat generated is used to supply the heating system and, in a separate loop, the hot water. The electricity from combined heat and power generation is consumed by the single-family and multiple family homes directly. Surpluses are fed into the public power grid.

Compared to conventional power generators, the resulting heat produced is also used, thus achieving a higher degree of efficiency. This reduces energy costs and CO₂ emissions. Mini or micro CHP systems are used in single and multi-family houses, while centralised CHP systems are used in building complexes.

In cogeneration, electricity is generated through combustion or physical reactions. The waste heat generated by this process is transferred via a heat exchanger to the buffer storage tank and the heating water. Any water vapour present in the flue gases is condensed and this heat is used to warm up service water. It is also possible to couple the cogeneration of heat and power with an absorption refrigerator and thereby use it for cooling.
