Sustainable Heating Innovation

When eco-friendly heating meets superior performance.

Setting new standards in the heating market is our tradition at Vaillant. We embrace climate and environmental protection as a challenge we're tackling today. Our autonomous energy solutions, like heat pumps powered by renewable energies, are key to this effort. As sustainable as they are, there’s always room for optimisation, not just in climate protection but also in manufacturing and economic operation. That's why every component of our products is crafted to be even more sustainable. We were among the first major manufacturers to use the environmentally friendly refrigerant R290 in our aroTHERM plus heat pump, shaping the market with its low Global Warming Potential (GWP), high efficiency values and a high flow temperature of up to 75°C. Now in its second generation, you can benefit even more from our years of experience. Embrace the future of sustainable heating with Vaillant and enjoy efficiency from an expert.

Exploring Natural Refrigerants

The eco-friendly edge of R290.

R290 is the technical name for propane, a natural refrigerant. It is not a synthetic refrigerant (F-gas) and is therefore not affected by the F-Gas Regulation, which comes into force in 2032.

R290 has a Global Warming Potential of 0,02 and therefore already meets all future requirements today! It's found in many daily items, like refrigerators and air conditioning systems. Vaillant is among the pioneers in using this eco-friendly refrigerant in heat pumps.

Environmental Impact of Refrigerants

How the Global Warming Potential affects our environmental footprint.

Understanding the environmental impact of refrigerants is essential, with Global Warming Potential (GWP) serving as a key measure. A lower GWP signifies a reduced climate effect. To determine CO₂ impact, multiply the refrigerant amount in the heat pump by its GWP.

For instance, R290 boasts a low GWP of 0.02, making it ideal for minimising environmental impact. Thus, 1.0 kilogram of R290 in a heat pump circuit would only emit 0.02 kilograms of CO₂, equivalent to baking 15 loaves of bread weighing 500 grams each. However, this only applies when the refrigerant escapes; refrigerants are normally extracted and reused at the end of a heat pump's service life. In contrast, 1.0 kilogram of R410a, a synthetic refrigerant with a GWP of 2,088, would emit 2,088 kilograms of CO₂, which is equivalent to a 40-hour flight per person.

Below are some examples of other refrigerants' GWPs compared to R290:
